In honor of what would be my grandmother's 93rd birthday, I will include a photo of her wearing--yes, it was the forties!!--peep-toed shoes. Some things never go out of style.
This is my grandparents' wedding day. Around the time of the second World War, grooms often wore their military uniforms and brides wore skirt suits. My guess is that this was a function of several factors--quick wedding dates being set as the young men went to war, the desire not to be too 'flashy' in the face of a very somber time in the nation, and a post-Depression thriftiness that surely influenced brides of my grandmother's generation. I love the idea of getting married in a smart suit. (My own mother did it in the 1970s!) It's very practical, but the flowers and hat dress up the outfit and elevate it to 'church' status.
I just love her ebullient smile.

This reminds me of my grandparents' wedding picture! My granddad wasn't in the military though, but the style of the bride's dress and the feel of the picture seems very similar to my grandparents. Thanks for sharing all these memories...and in so doing, jogging my own!
